Word association test with no scoring key

Twenty ordinary nouns appear one at a time; you type the first word each one brings and press Enter. Nothing you write is right or wrong — there is no key for free association and this page does not pretend to hold one. What it does record is the gap between the cue appearing and your first keystroke, and whether four cues shown again at the end bring back the same word. 20 words appear one at a time. Type the first word each one brings to mind and press Enter. There is nothing to get right — the page cannot mark your word, and it does not try to. What it measures is how long the word took to arrive and whether four of the cues, asked again later, bring back the same word.

What is measured, and where the clock stops

The timer runs from the frame that paints the cue to your first keystroke, not to Enter. How fast you type, how long the word is and whether you correct a typo are therefore outside the number entirely — a slow typist and a fast one who thought of the same word at the same moment get the same latency.

Four of the 20 cues come back at the end, at least eight cues after their first showing. Whether the same word returns is the one thing here that can be checked against something, and the something is you.

The two warm-up cues are not in the list and nothing from them is reported. If a cue brings nothing, there is a button to pass it — a blank is recorded as a blank rather than as a slow answer.

How to run the association list

Twenty cues, one word each, and two things worth measuring in what comes out.

  1. Take the two warm-up cues, or start straight in

    The warm-ups exist to settle one question before the recording starts: how literally to take first. The instruction means the word that arrives, not the best word — editing is the thing that ruins an association list, and a run where you weighed three candidates for each cue has measured your judgment rather than your associations. Neither warm-up cue is in the list and nothing from them is reported.

  2. Type one word per cue and press Enter

    The clock stops at your first letter, not at Enter, so typing speed, word length and typo corrections all sit outside the number. If a cue brings nothing at all there is a button to pass it, and a pass is recorded as a blank rather than folded in as a very slow answer. Four cues come back at the end, at least eight cues after their first showing, and the repeat is not announced.

  3. Read the two figures, then take the list

    The results show the median time from cue to first keystroke with the outlier rule that produced it, and how many of the four repeated cues brought back the same word. Under those sits every cue with your word and its latency, which is the actual output of this page: a record of what you wrote, not a reading of it. The copy button puts the whole table on your clipboard as plain text.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my score?

There is not one, and that is a design decision rather than an unfinished feature. A score needs a key, and free association has no key: whatever word arrives first is the correct answer to the only question being asked. The two figures at the end — how quickly words arrived and whether repeated cues brought back the same word — are measurements of the run rather than judgments of it, and neither is combined into anything. If a site hands you a score for this task, ask what it compared your words against; there are only two possible answers, a licensed dataset of what other people said, or nothing.

Is this the Jung word association test?

It uses the timing idea and none of the interpretation. Jung's version, a century ago, read a list aloud, recorded response times with a stopwatch, and treated a long pause, a repeated word or a failure to answer as a marker of an emotionally loaded area — a complex — to be explored afterwards. The timing survived into ordinary experimental practice, because how long a word takes to arrive is a real and reproducible quantity. The interpretation did not survive: the inference from a slow response to a hidden conflict never established the kind of reliability that would let anybody act on it, and this page makes no inference of that kind at any point.

Why does the clock stop at my first letter rather than when I press Enter?

Because everything between the first letter and Enter is typing, not association. A person who thinks of feather and types it in 900 ms and a person who thinks of feather and types it in 2,400 ms have had the same association, and timing to Enter would put a full second and a half between them for reasons that belong to their keyboards. Stopping at the first printable keystroke also makes the measurement fair to a phone, where an on-screen keyboard slows every word by a constant that has nothing to do with the cue. The cost is that a word thought of and then reconsidered is timed at the first thought, which is the right end of that trade.

Why are the cues so ordinary?

Because a cue list chosen for emotional weight is a different instrument with a different purpose, and it is the one this site stays out of. Words like mother, failure or blood produce responses that people then want interpreted, and interpretation of a single response is precisely the step that has no evidence behind it. Concrete, common, unloaded nouns give the same measurable quantities — a latency and a word — with nothing in them that invites a reading. There is a second, duller reason: a flat cue list produces latencies that vary with the cue's frequency and imageability rather than with whatever the reader brought to the page, which makes the median a more stable number.

Could you tell me how common my word is for that cue?

Only with a dataset this page does not have, and the honest thing is to say so rather than to approximate it. There is no norm to score a person against here, because free association has no correct answer. What exists instead is a different kind of reference: datasets recording how often each response was given to each cue. The best known of those collections is Nelson, McEvoy & Schreiber (2004), The University of South Florida free association, rhyme, and word fragment norms, built from several thousand respondents across several thousand cues. Carrying one would change this page from a record into a comparison, and it would need the licensing and the disk space to do it. Inventing a typicality figure without one would be the worst option of the three, because it is the number a visitor would believe.

Why did the repeated cue bring back a different word?

Most often because the first showing changed what was available. Producing a word makes its neighbors easier to reach for a while and the cue itself slightly less able to reach anything else, and the eight or more cues in between have each left their own residue — so the second showing happens in a different mental context from the first, by construction. A different word is therefore not instability and not an error; the count exists to show how strongly a cue dominates everything else that has happened since, which is a real property and varies enormously between cues. Two matches out of four is an ordinary result.

Does what I typed reveal anything about me?

Nothing this page can responsibly claim, and nothing it will guess at. The word a cue produces depends heavily on what you read this morning, what you did yesterday and which sense of the cue you happened to reach first — all of which change week to week — and the associations that are stable across a population are stable because of the language rather than because of the people speaking it. That leaves very little room for a reading of an individual list, which is why this page returns the list instead of a reading. What the list is genuinely good for is looking at yourself: it is a snapshot of what twenty ordinary words pulled up on one particular afternoon.

What can be measured when nothing can be marked

Free association is the rare measurement problem where the response cannot be wrong. Ask twenty people for the first word after needle and you will get thread, sharp, pain, sew, haystack and a dozen singletons, and no arrangement of that spread makes any of them an error. What exists in place of a key is a different kind of reference entirely: datasets in which a few thousand people were asked the same cues, so that the proportion giving each response is on record. Nelson, McEvoy & Schreiber (2004), The University of South Florida free association, rhyme, and word fragment norms is the largest of them for English. A page holding one can tell you that four respondents in ten also said thread, which is a fact about the language with you in it. This page holds none, so it says none — and the distance between those two positions is exactly the distance between a record and a comparison, which is worth naming rather than blurring.

That leaves two quantities that need no key at all, and the run is built around them. The first is latency, which is old: the practice of timing a response to a spoken word dates to the beginning of experimental psychology, and it survived into ordinary use because the interval is reproducible in a way that any reading of the word is not. Measured here from the paint of the cue to the first keystroke, it is dominated by how common the cue is and how easily it pictures — bread is faster than iron for nearly everybody — which is why the number worth looking at is your own median rather than any single cue. The second is agreement with yourself: four cues return late in the run, and whether the same word comes back is a reliability figure the run collects on itself, needing no population and no dataset. It is the only comparison on the page, and the thing being compared against is you a few minutes earlier.

The one measure people expect here and do not get is semantic distance — how far apart your response and the cue sit in meaning, or how far your responses wander from each other across the list. It is genuinely computable, and every way of computing it needs something this page will not carry: a licensed association dataset, a hand-built thesaurus with its own editorial decisions, or a distributional model that is a several-hundred-megabyte download before it says anything. A number produced without one of those would be decoration with decimals on it. What is left are string facts a page can actually check — a word used for two different cues, a response built out of the cue’s own letters — and those are reported as what they are. If you want the same raw material with a clock and a rule attached, the verbal fluency test asks for as many words as you can produce in a category in sixty seconds, which is association with a target and therefore scorable; for the version where a word does have a right answer, the synonym test is next door, and if what brought you here was how quickly you get through text rather than how quickly a word arrives, the reading speed test measures that directly.

A reaction time here is the interval between the frame that painted the stimulus and the timestamp the browser attached to your key, both read from the same monotonic clock. What neither can see is the display pipeline behind it, so on a 60 Hz screen roughly 16 ms of every figure below is the machine rather than you. That is the timing floor: two numbers closer together than that are the same number, and this page reports no precision it cannot support.

One extra source of error belongs to this page specifically and is worth stating beside the platform’s: the first keystroke is the moment your finger arrives, not the moment the word did. Reaching for a key adds its own delay on top of the display floor, and that delay differs between a laptop keyboard and a phone. Compare your own median with your own median on the same machine; a median from this page and a median from somebody else’s are not the same measurement.

This is a measurement exercise, not a clinical assessment. It reports what you did on this page against a stated reference and nothing more — it cannot establish anything about your personality, your memory or your state of mind. Only a qualified professional, working with more than a browser, can make that judgment.

What happens to the associations you gave

Every number on this page is worked out by JavaScript running in the tab you are reading it in. Your answers, your reaction times and your score are never uploaded, logged or kept — which is also why the test carries on working after you disconnect from the network, and why nothing here can be held back behind an email address.

This is the one page on the site where the raw data is text you wrote rather than a key you pressed, so it is worth being explicit: the words live in a JavaScript array in this tab, they are never uploaded, never stored, and never read by anything except the code drawing the table at the end. Nothing is checked against a dictionary, because there is no dictionary here to check against — which is also why the page can promise that no request leaves it during a run.
