The five reasons English words get misspelled
- Doubling before a suffix — Whether the final consonant doubles when -ed or -ing is added, which in American spelling depends on where the stress falls.
- Words that sound identical — Two spellings, one pronunciation, and only the sentence decides which is meant.
- Which ending it takes — -ible against -able, -ence against -ance, -ary against -ery — all pronounced the same and none of them predictable from sound.
- The vowel you cannot hear — An unstressed vowel collapses to the same sound whatever letter it is written with, so the spelling carries information the pronunciation has lost.
- Letters that are not pronounced — A consonant or vowel present in the spelling and absent from the speech, usually because the word arrived from another language with its spelling intact.
Each class holds 6 words. The run asks one from every class before it starts chasing errors, so no class is missing from the breakdown even on a run where everything went right.
Both routes accept British and American forms where the two genuinely differ — 3 of the 30 words in the bank have two correct spellings, and the result says which one you used rather than marking it. The field has the browser’s spell-checker and autocorrect switched off, and pasting into it is blocked.

Play the sample word and see which voice answered
The page looks for an English voice already installed in your browser and names the one it found, because pronunciation differs between voices and that difference belongs to the result. Press the sample button before you start: if nothing comes out, the volume is down or the voice failed to load, and the written route takes the same thirty words from a definition instead. On a browser with no speech voices at all — which includes several Linux builds and most automated ones — the dictation button is off and the written route is the only one offered.
Listen to all three readings before you type
Each word is read in the order a spelling bee uses: the word alone, the word inside a sentence, then the word alone again at a slower rate. The sentence is not decoration — it is the only thing that separates complement from compliment or stationery from stationary, and on those words the reading of the word by itself carries no information at all. Say it again replays the whole sequence as often as you like, and the count of replays is reported with the score.
Read the class table, not just the total
The result opens with words correct out of words asked, then breaks the run down by error class with the rule behind each one, then names the single class you did worst in and what to do about it. Under that sits every word you saw with what you typed and why the word is hard. The denominators differ between classes on purpose, because a wrong answer pulls the next two words from the same class, so each row is a rate rather than a count to compare across rows.

Frequently asked questions
The voice said a word I could spell two ways. Which one did it want?
Whichever the sentence supports, which is why the sentence is read at all. Six of the thirty words are homophones — complement and compliment, principal and principle, stationery and stationary, discreet and discrete, counsel and council, affect and effect — and for those the word read on its own is genuinely ambiguous. The carrier sentence resolves it every time: two studies that complement each other are completing each other, not praising each other. If you spelled the other member of the pair, the review marks it wrong and says what the sentence was pointing at.
Why does the same voice pronounce some words strangely?
Because a synthesizer works from letters and a pronunciation dictionary, and the dictionary is not complete. Names and loanwords are where it shows most: liaison and rhythm come out differently between voices, and February is a word most human speakers do not fully pronounce either. That is why the page names the voice it used beside the score. It is also why a synthesizer cannot be the only route through this page — the written prompt exists both for anyone who cannot hear it and for anyone whose voice mangles a word.
Is typing a word the same test as choosing the right spelling?
No, and the difference is large enough that the two should not share a name. Choosing between traveled, travelled, travled and traveled is recognition: the correct form is in front of you and the task is to notice it. Typing it from dictation is production, and production is where the doubling rules and the -ence endings actually have to be known rather than recognized. Almost every page that ranks for this query does the multiple-choice version, which is why it can score you without any audio at all.
I replayed nearly every word. Does that ruin the result?
It does not affect the score at all and it does change what the time means. The count of replays is reported next to the median time per word, because a replay adds another three readings to that word's interval, and a run replayed throughout has a median that is mostly voice rather than thinking. The spelling itself is scored the same either way: hearing a word four times does not tell you whether the l doubles.
Why are some classes asked more often than others?
Because the run chases errors. After a wrong answer the next two words come from the same class, on the reasoning that one error is an accident and three in a row is a rule that was never taught — so a class you missed at word six may end up asked five times and a class you got right may be asked once. The class table therefore has different denominators in each row and has to be read as a rate. This is the opposite of what a difficulty ladder does, and it is deliberate: a spelling level is not actionable and a named rule is.
Does British or American spelling count as correct?
Both, on the three words in the bank where they genuinely differ, and the review says which you used. Those three are not an afterthought — traveled and travelled is the cleanest illustration in the language of why a doubling rule needs a variant policy, because British spelling doubles a final l after an unstressed vowel and American spelling does not. Where a word has one spelling in both varieties, as controlling does, it is marked strictly. The site is written in American spelling throughout, so the canonical form stored with each word is the American one.
Can I use this to test a child?
You can run it with anybody, but nothing here converts into a spelling age or a school year, and the word bank was chosen for adult writing rather than for a curriculum. The words are the ones that go wrong in professional prose — maintenance, necessary, existence, privilege — and a graded school list is built quite differently, in ascending difficulty with words tied to a syllabus. What transfers to a child is the class breakdown: consonant doubling and unheard vowels are the same two rules at any age.
Why spelling errors sort into five kinds
English spelling is not random, and the places it goes wrong are not random either. Almost every misspelling an adult produces falls into one of five situations where the sound of the word does not determine its letters. A consonant may or may not double before a suffix, and in American spelling that depends on where the stress falls: refer is stressed on the last syllable so it becomes referring, target is stressed on the first so it becomes targeted, and the second one is what people write wrongly once they have learned the rule. Two spellings may share a pronunciation exactly, in which case nothing audible can decide between them and only the sentence can. An ending may be -ible or -able, -ence or -ance, -ary or -ery, all of them reduced to the same sound in speech. An unstressed vowel collapses into a schwa, so separate hides an a that no pronunciation reveals. And a letter may simply not be pronounced, as in subtle or receipt, because English kept the spelling when it dropped the sound.
That taxonomy is why this page dictates rather than offering four spellings to choose from. A multiple-choice item shows you the correct form and asks you to recognize it, which is a genuinely easier task and a different one: the doubling rules and the -ence endings only have to be known when nothing on screen contains them. Dictation also makes the carrier sentence load-bearing rather than decorative. Read complement on its own and there is no information in the sound at all; read it in a sentence about two studies completing each other and the spelling follows. The one thing dictation cannot fix is a word whose pronunciation actively misleads — most speakers say February without the first r, so that word has to be spelled from knowledge and the voice is a hindrance. It is in the bank precisely for that reason.
What this page will not do is borrow somebody else’s norms, and the reason is worth stating plainly. No population figure exists for spelling a word list, because a word list is chosen rather than sampled: the average would describe whoever picked these thirty words and the voice that read them, not the people who took it. So there is no spelling age here, no grade equivalent and no rank — a count, a median time and five class rates, and the only comparison they support is with your own next run. A published spelling test carries norms because its word list was administered to a standardization sample under controlled conditions, and the norms belong to that list. A reaction time here is the interval between the frame that painted the stimulus and the timestamp the browser attached to your key, both read from the same monotonic clock. What neither can see is the display pipeline behind it, so on a 60 Hz screen roughly 16 ms of every figure below is the machine rather than you. That is the timing floor: two numbers closer together than that are the same number, and this page reports no precision it cannot support.
Nothing here is scored on speed, and the median below is descriptive rather than graded: a word typed in four seconds and one typed in twenty both count once. The interval it measures starts at the frame that painted the prompt, so all three spoken readings sit inside it — which is why it is reported in seconds and never finer, and why comparing it with a typing speed measured on visible text would compare two different things. Words are not discarded for arriving fast; a run you may sit on has no such thing as too fast.
This is a measurement exercise, not a clinical assessment. It reports what you did on this page against a stated reference and nothing more — it cannot establish dyslexia, dysgraphia or a specific learning difficulty. Only a qualified professional, working with more than a browser, can make that judgment.
Spelling difficulty has many causes that a word list cannot separate — a hearing difference, an unfamiliar keyboard layout, a language learned later, or simply not having read the word before. A run of twenty words distinguishes none of them.
