The practice items are one of each kind, untimed, and each one names the rule it was built from afterwards — including the rule you just used without putting a name to it. Nothing in them reaches the score, and the clock does not start until the timed set does.

How to take the practice set

Three untimed items to learn the formats, then one clock across twenty-four.

  1. Take the three practice items with no clock on them

    One matrix, one series, one classification, untimed, and each one tells you afterwards which rule it was built from — shape distributed one to a row and one to a column, fill alternating, sides climbing by one. That is the part worth having before a supervised sitting: the formats stop being a surprise. Skip them if you already know the formats; nothing in them reaches the score either way.

  2. Answer 24 items in 12 minutes, six options each

    One clock runs across the whole set rather than one per item, so the pacing decision is yours: roughly 30 seconds an item on average, spent where you choose. Press 1 to 6, or tap the option. There is no way back to an earlier item and no penalty for a wrong answer, so an item you cannot see through is an item to guess and leave. The clock stops if this tab goes to the background, and the item that was on screen is dropped rather than asked again.

  3. Read the raw score, then the two tables under it

    The result leads with items correct out of 24, then the interval around that proportion, then the exact probability of scoring that well by guessing at one chance in six. Under it sits the qualifying threshold with its source, and the list of all 24 items with the rule each was built from and which ones you missed. There is no IQ figure anywhere in it, and the panel says why in one paragraph rather than in a footnote.

Frequently asked questions

Can a score from this page qualify me for Mensa?

No, and neither can any other online test, including the ones the national organizations publish themselves. Qualification requires a supervised sitting: a proctor, an approved instrument, a timed administration under conditions that are the same for everyone, and a result reported by the tester rather than by the person tested. That is the whole point of supervision — an unwatched score is a claim about yourself, and nobody admits on those. What an online set can do is show you the formats before the day, which is what this one is for.

Why does a test in this format not give me an IQ number?

Because an IQ figure is a rank against a standardization sample, and this page has no sample. A published test is normed by testing a few thousand people chosen to match a census, one at a time, by trained examiners, under identical conditions; the raw score is then converted to a scale score through that sample's distribution. Nothing on this page has any of it — the items were generated minutes ago, nobody watched, and the people who have taken them are self-selected visitors, not a population. A site that turns 17 correct into an IQ of 128 has simply invented the conversion, and the number it hands you is the one you will repeat.

Why do 130, 132 and 148 all describe the same person?

Because they are the same rank on three scales with different spreads. All three put the mean at 100, but a Wechsler standard deviation is 15 points, the historical Stanford-Binet Form L-M used 16, and the Cattell scales use 24 — so the 98th percentile lands at 130.8, 132.9, 149.3 respectively. An IQ figure with no scale named beside it is therefore incomplete, and the disagreement people notice between one organization's published cut score and another's is usually not a disagreement at all.

Are these the real admission items?

No, and they could not be. The item banks of the published instruments are copyrighted and controlled, and several are controlled precisely because leaked items destroy the thing they measure — an item you have seen before tests recall, not reasoning. So the items here are generated from the published construction rules instead: an attribute held constant along a row, an attribute stepping down a column, an attribute distributed so each value appears once per row and once per column. That means your score is not comparable to a score from a real administration, and it also means practicing here cannot leak into a supervised sitting.

Does practicing this format actually change anything?

It removes format surprise, which is a real source of avoidable error, and it does not raise the ability the test is trying to measure. On a first encounter a chunk of the time goes into working out what kind of thing is being asked; once you know that a matrix has three attributes and that one of them is usually distributed one-per-row-and-column, that time goes into the item instead. That is worth having on the day. It is also the reason qualification rests on a supervised sitting rather than on however many browser runs somebody cares to do, and the reason nothing here should be read as an estimate of how a real session would go.

Should I guess on an item I cannot see through?

Yes — a wrong answer and a blank cost exactly the same here, because the score is the number right with nothing subtracted. With six options a blind guess is right one time in six, so guessing every unanswered item is worth about four items across a full set, and guessing the two or three you have narrowed to a pair is worth considerably more. The results panel reports the exact probability of your whole score arising from guessing, which is the honest way to read a set this short: 8 correct out of 24 is not a meaningfully different result from 4.

What happens if I switch tabs, or the clock runs out mid-item?

The item on screen is dropped and the run continues without re-asking it. A background tab stops receiving frames, so the page cannot know what you were looking at or for how long, and the honest response is to void that item rather than record a two-minute answer. It is not asked again either, because you have already read it and a second showing would measure memory. If the twelve minutes expire, the item in progress is voided the same way and the items you never reached are counted as unanswered — they are the hardest ones, because the set is ordered easiest first.

The 98th percentile, and why it is written three different ways

The admission criterion is a percentile rather than a score: 98th percentile of the general population, per Mensa International's published admission criterion — The criterion is a percentile, not a score. The score that reaches it differs by test.. Everything confusing about the familiar numbers follows from that one fact. A percentile has to be expressed on some scale before it becomes a number, and the scales in circulation do not share a standard deviation — so one rank comes out three ways:

National organizations round those and publish the rounded figures: American Mensa states 132 on the Stanford-Binet and 130 on the Wechsler scales, British Mensa states 148 on the Cattell III B. Nobody is disagreeing with anybody — 130 and 148 are one rank described in two units, and a person holding both scores holds one result. This is also why an IQ figure quoted with no scale beside it cannot be checked, and why the second question to ask about any such number is when the test was normed. Test performance drifts upward against fixed norms at ≈ 3 IQ points Flynn (1987), Massive IQ gains in 14 nations: What IQ tests really measure, Psychological Bulletin — and the drift is largest on exactly the abstract matrix items that free online tests copy, so an undated norm table quietly inflates everyone it scores.

The items on this page are generated rather than reproduced, and the reason is the same reason supervision exists: a published matrix item that has escaped into circulation no longer measures anything, because whoever has seen it is remembering rather than reasoning. So the generator works from the construction rules the literature describes instead — a value held constant along a row, a value stepping down a column, a value distributed so that each of three appears exactly once in every row and once in every column. Two attributes here never share a rule, which is what makes the nine cells nine distinct drawings; an item where two cells coincide usually has a second answer somebody can argue for, and that is a scoring fault rather than a hard item. What is deliberately missing is the fourth format the culture-fair batteries use — the topology items, where a dot has to be placeable inside one shape and outside another — because a generated version of those is only unambiguous when the geometry is checked by hand, and an item with two defensible answers is worse than an item that is not there.

Where those rules come from

The five rules describe how the items of one published test were built. They say nothing about how well anybody does on them, and knowing a rule makes an item easier to attack without making the person attacking it a better reasoner — which is the honest limit of what a practice page can offer.

A supervised session looks nothing like this page, and it is worth knowing the shape of it before you sit one. A proctor administers approved instruments to a room or to one person, with photo identification checked, strict timing on each separately timed section, no calculator, no phone and no going back to a section that has closed; the score goes from the tester to the organization rather than to you, and you are told only whether the qualifying rank was reached. The second route in is documented prior evidence — a score you already have from an approved, supervised administration of an approved test, sent in by the institution that holds it. The list of approved tests and the accepted dates are published by each national organization and they differ, so the only reliable version of that list is the current one on the site of the organization you are applying to. What is not a route, anywhere, is a screenshot of a browser result.

If the thing you actually want to know is narrower than a global figure, the neighbors measure it more directly and none of them takes twelve minutes. Reasoning of the strict kind — does this conclusion follow from these premises, or does it merely happen to be true — is the deductive reasoning test, and the number half of an admission battery is the math aptitude test, with the quick math test for the same arithmetic under a tighter clock. If what cost you items above was the pace rather than the reasoning, that is a separate thing and the processing speed test reports it on its own.

A reaction time here is the interval between the frame that painted the stimulus and the timestamp the browser attached to your key, both read from the same monotonic clock. What neither can see is the display pipeline behind it, so on a 60 Hz screen roughly 16 ms of every figure below is the machine rather than you. That is the timing floor: two numbers closer together than that are the same number, and this page reports no precision it cannot support.

That floor is why the only millisecond figure on this page is a rule rather than a result: an answer arriving within 150 ms of an item appearing is discarded, because light has to reach the retina and a signal has to reach the finger before any choice is possible. Everything the run reports back is a span of seconds — a reasoning item takes tens of them — and a quantity that large has no business being printed to the millisecond.
