Two notes play and you name the distance between them, with the answer arriving the moment you give one and the interval there to replay while you look at what it was. Set the level on a fifth first

This plays a perfect fifth, the first interval the ladder gives you, at the level everything else will use. It starts quiet on purpose — a session here is a few hundred tones and the volume that is fine for one is not always fine for two hundred. Raise it until both notes are distinct, not until they are loud.

How to practice intervals here

Set a level on a fifth, pick a ladder or a drill, and work from the middle column.

  1. Set the level on a perfect fifth

    The check plays a fifth, which is the widest-margin interval in the whole exercise and the first one the ladder gives you. Raise the level until the two notes are distinct rather than until they are loud — a session here can run to a few hundred tones, and a volume that is fine for one pair is tiring at that length. Every tone afterward plays at whatever you set.

  2. Take the ladder if you are learning, the drill if you are fixing something

    The ladder starts with a fifth and an octave and nothing else, and widens the answer set after three correct in a row, narrowing it again after one wrong. That rule settles where you are right about 79% of the time, which is the region where practice does something and frustration does not. The drill instead repeats exactly the intervals you tick, and the reason to reach for it is the confusion table from a previous session.

  3. Answer, replay, and read the middle column at the end

    Only the intervals currently in play appear as buttons, so the odds of a lucky guess are visible instead of hidden; the top keyboard row Q through Y and the home row A through H match the two rows of buttons. Replays are unlimited and cost nothing. When you stop, the table shows this session, what you named each interval instead, and a lifetime count from every session this browser has kept.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the starting note move on every trial?

Because a fixed root teaches the wrong thing. Drill enough fifths from middle C and what improves is your recognition of the specific pair C-G, which does not transfer to the same fifth played from E flat — and the improvement feels real right up until the moment somebody plays it in another key. Moving the root through a full octave forces the interval itself to be the thing you learn. Why are the harmonic intervals so much harder than the melodic ones?

Because they are a different judgment wearing the same name. When two notes play in turn, you compare the second against a memory of the first, and the answer is a distance. When they play together, there is no sequence to compare — you are hearing a single sonority, and what identifies it is its quality: the beating of a mistuned pair, the hollowness of a fifth, the tension of a tritone. Many people who name melodic intervals fluently are near chance on harmonic ones for months, and the fix is not more melodic practice. Tick the ones you miss into the drill and hear them stacked until each has a character rather than a size.

Song mnemonics work for me. Why does this page not use them?

Because they run out exactly where the difficulty starts. The familiar mnemonics — a film theme for a fifth, a folk tune for a fourth — are all ascending and all from the root, so they cover perhaps a third of what you actually need. There is no well-known tune that starts with a descending minor sixth, and none at all for a harmonic anything, which is why the mnemonic method produces students who are quick on rising intervals and helpless the moment a line goes down. Nothing here forbids using them; the page simply refuses to test only the third of the material they cover, which is why direction is drawn at random on every trial.

What exactly is stored in my browser, and how do I get rid of it?

Two things, both counts. A per-interval running total of correct and attempted, and one line per finished session holding the date, the totals and the widest answer set you reached — twenty sessions, after which the oldest falls off. There is no record of which intervals played in what order, no timing, and nothing that could identify you. It lives in this browser's local storage for this site alone, so it is not on your other devices and not on any server. The delete button under the history clears it immediately, and clearing this site's data does the same.

Why do the answer buttons show only some of the intervals?

So that you can see your own odds. If all twelve buttons were on screen while the ladder was only playing fifths and octaves, a guess would look like a one-in-twelve shot when it was really a coin flip, and both you and the summary at the end would be reading the run wrong. Showing exactly the set in play makes the guessing rate visible at every moment, and it is why the summary computes chance per trial from the set that was actually on screen instead of quoting one number for the session.

How long should a session be?

Shorter and more often beats long and occasional, and the reason is specific to this material rather than general advice. Interval recognition consolidates between sessions rather than within one, so twenty trials on six days does more than a hundred and twenty in one sitting — and the second half of a long session is where the confusion table fills up with mistakes made through fatigue rather than through not knowing, which then pollutes the thing you were going to work from. A useful stopping rule is the moment you notice yourself answering by elimination instead of by hearing.

Why does the tritone not appear until the last set?

Because it has no neighbors to be told apart from until the rest of the set exists. A tritone is identified largely by what it is not — not the fourth below it, not the fifth above it — so introducing it into a two-interval set teaches nothing except that the odd-sounding one is the new button. By the time it arrives, both of its neighbors are in play and the discrimination is real. It is also the interval most reliably named as something else, which is why the confusion column beside it is usually the most informative row in the whole table.

Why intervals are the unit, and what most trainers leave out

Ear training is built on intervals rather than on notes because the interval is what transfers. A melody heard in one key and then played in another shares no absolute pitches at all, and every note name changes, but the distances between the notes are identical — so a musician who has learned distances can take down a line in any key, while one who has learned pitches has learned one key. That is the whole argument for the unit, and it is also the argument for moving the root on every trial here. The skill you want has the shape of a relation, and a drill that keeps one endpoint fixed lets you solve it as a pair of endpoints instead.

The adaptive set is the second design decision worth explaining, because it is the one that most obviously departs from how these pages usually work. Presenting all twelve intervals from the first trial is honest but pedagogically empty: a beginner sits near chance for long enough that no feedback is informative, since being told a wrong answer teaches nothing when eleven answers were equally plausible. Starting at two and widening on a three-right rule keeps the run near the difficulty where an error is diagnostic — the set is small enough that a mistake means something specific — and the three-right, one-wrong rule settles at roughly 79% correct by arithmetic rather than by tuning. The same family of rule runs the pitch staircase on the tone deaf test, over the size of a pitch change rather than the size of an answer set; it is worth seeing the two side by side, because the mechanism is identical and what it walks is not.

What is missing from almost every interval trainer is the error data, and it is the part that makes practice targeted rather than merely repeated. Knowing that you got 62% tells you to keep going. Knowing that you name a minor sixth a fifth four times out of five, while your fifths are perfect, tells you that the two have collapsed into one category in your ear, and that the fix is to hear them alternately rather than to hear more of everything. That is what the middle column of the table is for, and it is why the drill mode takes an arbitrary subset instead of preset levels. For a single scored run rather than an open session, the relative pitch test gives twenty-four fixed trials with a confidence interval on the total, and the perfect pitch test asks the question this page deliberately never asks — what the note was, rather than how far it was from the last one. Why this page reports counts and never a level, a grade or a rank

Interval identification is a trained skill with no population norm — performance tracks years of ear training, not an underlying ability, and the published figures that exist are for conservatory students.

This is a measurement exercise, not a clinical assessment. It reports what you did on this page against a stated reference and nothing more — it cannot establish a musical learning difficulty. Only a qualified professional, working with more than a browser, can make that judgment.

Every number on this page is worked out by JavaScript running in the tab you are reading it in. Your answers, your reaction times and your score are never uploaded, logged or kept — which is also why the test carries on working after you disconnect from the network, and why nothing here can be held back behind an email address.
