Two assessments, one name — which one are you sitting?

The Predictive Index sells two things people arrive here confusing. The Cognitive Assessment is timed: 50 multiple-choice questions in 12 minutes, drawn across verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, scored as the number answered correctly. The Behavioral Assessment is untimed, takes about six minutes, asks two questions over one shared list of adjectives, and has no right answers at all. Only the first is something you can meaningfully practice, so that is the one drilled below — free, with generated items, and with a second run that shows how far your own count moves between two forms.

The cognitive assessment is 50 multiple-choice questions in 12 minutes, drawn from a larger pool across verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, and scored as the number answered correctly. This drill copies that shape. It also copies something less obvious: the publisher states that its delivery engine never presents the same assessment twice, which means the number belongs to a form, and the panel here is built to show you how much of yours does.

Which types to include

All three is the published shape: 50 items in 12:00. Turning one off shortens the form rather than stretching it — the run becomes 50 items in 12:00 at the same 14.4 seconds an item, so the tempo is unchanged and the structure is no longer the publisher’s. Run one type on its own if you want to know what that type alone costs you, or if the drawn frames are not usable for you.

The other assessment with the same name is not here

The behavioral assessment is a different instrument entirely: untimed, two questions over one shared list of adjectives, about six minutes, and reported as a pattern across four primary factors plus a secondary one rather than as a count of right answers. It has no correct responses, so there is nothing in it to practice and nothing here to score. A drill that imitated it could only teach you to answer as somebody other than yourself, which is the one outcome that instrument is designed to catch.

How to get a number worth having

One form gives you a count. Two forms give you the width of it.

  1. Leave all three types on for the published shape

    Verbal, numerical and abstract together make 50 questions in 12 minutes, which is the format as the publisher describes it. The checkboxes exist for a different job: running one type on its own gives it a full seventeen questions instead of a third of a mixed form, which is the only way to find out whether a weak-looking row in the results is real. Narrowing the selection shortens the clock in proportion so the tempo never changes.

  2. Run it, then run it again

    The panel keeps every finished form that used the same type selection, and from the second one it replaces the single count with the range across them. That range is the answer to the question people actually have — whether a practice number means anything — and no single sitting can produce it.

  3. Read the three types apart before you read the total

    The table splits right-answers and median seconds by verbal, numerical and abstract. The types are shuffled through one another rather than blocked, so a slow row is slow wherever it appeared. Seventeen questions is enough to notice a gap and not enough to trust it, which is what the single-type run is for.

Frequently asked questions

I was told to take a Predictive Index test. Which one is it?

Read the invitation for a time limit: the cognitive one has twelve minutes on it and the behavioral one has none. The other tell is the first screen — a multiple-choice question with a clock is the cognitive assessment, while a long list of adjectives to tick is the behavioral one. Many employers send both in the same email, which is exactly why the two get merged into one thing called “the PI test” in every conversation about it.

Can I practice the behavioral one?

There is nothing there to practice, and that is a statement about the instrument rather than about our effort. It asks you to pick adjectives describing how you are expected to behave at work and then adjectives you would use for yourself, with no right answer and no failing it. A drill could only teach you to select a different set of words than the ones you would have chosen, which produces a description of somebody who does not exist and gets you hired into a job fitted to them.

Why did my count move so much between two forms?

Because a fifty-item count carries real sampling noise, and the two forms were not the same questions. Each one is built fresh here, exactly as the publisher describes its own delivery working — a linear-on-the-fly engine that assembles an equivalent set rather than repeating one. Equivalent is not identical: one form hands you three percentage items and the next hands you three comparison chains, and if one of those is your weak spot the count moves. The range across your forms is the honest version of your result and the single count is not.

Does the test get harder as I answer correctly?

No, and the distinction matters if you have met an adaptive test before. An adaptive assessment chooses each item from how you answered the last one, so two candidates see completely different difficulty paths. The engine described here assembles the whole equivalent form before you start, which is why every sitting has the same fifty-question shape and the same twelve minutes while nobody sees the same fifty twice. Nothing you do in the first ten questions changes what the last ten are.

Why does deselecting a type make the test shorter rather than longer?

Because the tempo is the thing being copied, and stretching seventeen questions across twelve minutes would quietly turn a pace test into an untimed quiz. Each question keeps its 14.4 seconds whatever you select, so a verbal-only run is seventeen questions in four minutes and five seconds and feels exactly as tight as the full form. What changes is the structure, and the panel says so rather than presenting a two-type run as the published one.

What is a scaled score, and why does this page not give me one?

It is the count of right answers put onto a stated range of 100 to 450 by the publisher, and it is not reconstructible from the outside. The mapping between the two is part of the product, and beyond it sits a second private number: a cognitive target for the role, which is what a candidate is actually compared against. A page that invented either would be inventing the only figure a reader would repeat, on a subject where being wrong costs an application.

Are the abstract items like the real ones?

They are in the same family and they are not copies of anything. The published bank is the publisher's property and reproducing it would be both an infringement and self-defeating, since an item you have already seen tests nothing. What is imitated is the shape of the operation: a rule that has to be inferred from a few drawings and then applied to one more, with no vocabulary and no arithmetic in the way. Ours vary the number of dots and the angle of a figure together, so both have to be noticed.

The cognitive assessment, the behavioral one, and why the difference matters to you

These two instruments have almost nothing in common except a brand. The Cognitive Assessment is a speeded ability test: fifty multiple-choice questions pulled from a larger pool across verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, twelve minutes for all of them, and a score that is simply how many you got right before the clock stopped. The Behavioral Assessment is a self-report: untimed, roughly six minutes, two questions over a single shared list of adjectives — one asking which describe how you are expected to behave at work, the other which really describe you — and it reports a pattern across four primary behavioral factors with a fifth, secondary one describing decision-making style. One has right answers and a clock. The other has neither, and cannot be passed or failed.

The confusion between them is not carelessness on anybody’s part; employers routinely send both at once and candidates receive one email about “the PI test”. But the two demand opposite things. On the timed one, preparation is legitimately useful, because a meaningful part of a first sitting goes on working out what the format wants rather than on the questions. On the untimed one, preparation is the failure mode: the value of a self-report depends entirely on it describing the person who filled it in, and a candidate coached into a different adjective set has arranged to be matched against a job that suits somebody else. That asymmetry is why only one of the two is drilled here.

One published detail about the timed assessment shapes what this page reports. The delivery engine is described as building an equivalent form on the fly so that a participant is never presented with the same assessment twice — which is a quiet admission that a count belongs to a form as much as to a person. Rather than argue about that, the drill measures it: run two forms and the panel stops printing a single number and starts printing the range your own count occupied. A reaction time here is the interval between the frame that painted the stimulus and the timestamp the browser attached to your key, both read from the same monotonic clock. What neither can see is the display pipeline behind it, so on a 60 Hz screen roughly 16 ms of every figure below is the machine rather than you. That is the timing floor: two numbers closer together than that are the same number, and this page reports no precision it cannot support.

This is a measurement exercise, not a clinical assessment. It reports what you did on this page against a stated reference and nothing more — it cannot establish dyscalculia, a language difficulty, or any other reason one of the three types came out slower than the rest. Only a qualified professional, working with more than a browser, can make that judgment.

Every number on this page is worked out by JavaScript running in the tab you are reading it in. Your answers, your reaction times and your score are never uploaded, logged or kept — which is also why the test carries on working after you disconnect from the network, and why nothing here can be held back behind an email address.

The comparison across forms is the one thing on this site that accumulates, and it accumulates in memory in this tab only — not in local storage, not in a cookie, not anywhere a second visit could read it. Reloading the page throws every finished form away, which is why the copy button carries all of them at once rather than one at a time.
