Six senses, four statements each
How often is each of these true of an ordinary week of yours? Two statements per sense ask how readily something registers, and two ask whether you go looking for it. They are not opposites: wanting a heavy blanket and flinching at an unexpected hand are both high, in the same channel, in a great many people.

Rate 24 statements by how often they are true
Four per sense: two about the level at which something registers with you, two about whether you go and find it. Answer for an ordinary week rather than for your worst day. The two axes are not opposites and the statements are not written as if they were — a low threshold and a large appetite in the same channel is a common combination and the layout allows for it.
Decide about the pattern block, with the warning in front of you
The next screen explains what the patterns are, states plainly that high-contrast stripes are a trigger for some people with migraine and a minority of people with photosensitive epilepsy, and offers a button that skips straight to the profile. Everything in the block is static — nothing flickers, nothing animates, nothing fills the screen — and each pattern appears only after its own button, with a control beside it that removes it at once.
If you take it, calibrate the screen first
Drag a bar until it matches the width of any bank card, which is 85.6 mm by international standard, and set how far your eye is from the screen. Those two numbers turn a spacing in cycles per degree of visual angle into a stripe width in pixels — the whole point of the block, since the same pattern at the wrong distance is a different pattern. Then look at each of the three and tick whatever it did.

Frequently asked questions
I am sensitive to noise and I also love loud music. Is my profile contradictory?
It is one of the commonest patterns there is, and the two-axis layout exists to show it rather than to flatten it. How readily something registers with you and how much you want it are separate facts: a low threshold means the fridge hum reaches you when it reaches nobody else, and a high appetite means you put music on loud because the input is welcome when you chose it. The thing they have in common is often control — an input you selected and can stop is a different experience from one arriving at you from the next desk. A single sensitivity score would have averaged those two statements into a middling number describing neither.
Why is there no quadrant at the end, like the clinical questionnaires give?
Because a quadrant is a placement against a standardization sample, and that sample is the part that is sold. The four-quadrant framework itself is published theory — Dunn (1997) set out the idea that a threshold for noticing crosses with an active or passive way of responding — and describing it costs nothing. What costs is the norm table that decides where your score stops being one quadrant and becomes another, and that table is a commercial clinical product. Printing a quadrant name without it would be the same claim with none of the evidence behind it, so the page hands you the twelve raw numbers and the framework to read them with.
Is sensory processing disorder an actual diagnosis?
Not a standalone one in the current psychiatric manual, and that is worth knowing before any test in this area is interpreted. Hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory input appears in the DSM-5 as one of the criteria for autism spectrum disorder rather than as a condition in its own right, and a proposal to list it separately was not adopted. Occupational therapists work with it as a clinical construct daily, and whether it should have its own entry is an open argument rather than a settled question. None of that makes the experience less real; it does mean that no questionnaire, here or anywhere, can hand you a label the manual does not contain.
Why does the page ask me to measure a bank card?
Because the pattern block is defined in cycles per degree of visual angle, and a browser cannot work that out on its own. CSS defines an inch as 96 pixels by fiat, which is right on almost no real display — a dense laptop panel packs far more pixels into a physical inch, so a pattern drawn on the nominal assumption would be much finer than intended and would land in a different part of the spatial-frequency range. A bank card is 85.6 mm wide everywhere in the world by ISO standard, so matching a bar to one gives a true pixels-per-millimeter figure, and your stated eye distance does the rest of the trigonometry.
The finest pattern looked gray rather than striped. Did I do something wrong?
No — you ran into the display, and the page tells you when that is about to happen. At an ordinary desk distance the 12-cycle pattern works out at under two pixels a stripe, and a screen cannot render alternating black and white lines that thin without them blending toward a flat gray. That is a limit of the hardware rather than of your vision, which is precisely why the middle pattern is the one the result leans on and why the fine one is there as a comparison rather than as a measurement in its own right.
What is interoception, and why is one of the six senses about my own insides?
Interoception is the sense of the body's internal state — heartbeat, breathing, hunger, thirst, temperature, the condition of the gut — and it is left out of most sensory questionnaires despite being the channel people are most often quietly confused by. Difficulty reading it looks like realizing at four in the afternoon that the bad mood was hunger, or not registering a full bladder until it is urgent. It is included here because leaving it out would suggest sensory processing is only about what arrives from outside, and because it is the channel that connects this page most directly to how people describe difficulty naming emotions.
My sensitivity scores are high across the board. Does that mean I am autistic?
It does not, and the reasoning is worth spelling out because this is the inference people arrive here already half-making. Sensory reactivity is one criterion among several for autism and is not sufficient on its own; it also occurs in migraine, in anxiety, in attention difficulties, after concussion, in people who are simply tired, and in a substantial number of people with no clinical anything who are just built that way. A profile of self-reported frequencies cannot distinguish between those, and a page that implied otherwise from twelve numbers would be doing exactly the thing this site refuses to do. What the profile is good for is the concrete part: knowing which channel is loud for you is what makes a room, a job or an evening adjustable.
Two axes instead of one, and the one thing a browser can add
The reason so many people describe their own sensory life as contradictory is that the popular version of it has one axis. Sensitive or not sensitive, and everything has to fit on that line — which leaves no room for the person who cannot bear a scratchy label and sleeps under a fifteen-pound blanket, or who is undone by open-plan noise and drives with the stereo at full volume. The framework the clinical instruments are built on has two axes rather than one: a neurological threshold, meaning how much input it takes before something registers, crossed with what you do about it, meaning whether you go looking or keep away. That is Dunn (1997), The impact of sensory processing abilities on the daily lives of young children and their families: a conceptual model, Infants & Young Children, and it is the useful half of those instruments because it explains the combinations rather than sorting people. A low threshold with a high appetite is not a paradox; it is one row of a table.
What this page will not do is put you in one of the four boxes that framework makes. The adult and adolescent sensory profiles are commercial clinical instruments with quadrant norms sold to qualified purchasers. The boundary between one quadrant and the next is a cut on a standardization sample, and that sample is the thing being sold — so a browser that printed a quadrant name would be selling the conclusion without owning the evidence. It would be the wrong output even if it were free to print, because a quadrant is assigned from a total and totals across senses hide the structure. Sensitivity to sound and sensitivity to texture are only loosely related in the same person, which is why twelve numbers stay twelve here. If sound is the channel that brought you, the misophonia test goes much deeper into it, and specifically into the case where the problem is which sound rather than how loud.
The last block is the only part of this page that is not you reporting on yourself, and it exists because there turns out to be one sensory demonstration a browser can run honestly. Reports of distortion in a static striped pattern — shimmering, bending, colors that are not in the ink, a wish to look away — are far commoner at around three cycles per degree of visual angle than at much coarser or much finer spacings, and that peak sits in visual processing rather than in the paper or the screen: Wilkins, Nimmo-Smith, Tait, McManus, Della Sala, Tilley, Arnold, Barrie & Scott (1984), A neurological basis for visual discomfort, Brain. Because the effect is defined against the visual field rather than against the display, it needs your screen scale and your viewing distance, which is what the card and the distance slider are for. There is a clinical version with published normative values — Evans & Stevenson (2008), The Pattern Glare Test: a review and determination of normative values, Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics — and this is not it: the gratings are computed here rather than printed there, so no threshold from that test applies and none is shown. The output is a comparison of your own three counts, which is all a browser is entitled to. For a neighbor that also pairs self-report with something behavioral, the alexithymia test splits feeling from naming the same way this one splits threshold from appetite, and the synesthesia test checks a cross-channel experience by consistency rather than by asking about it.
No figure anywhere on this page is a reaction time and nothing here runs on a clock. That is not an oversight: how quickly somebody ticks a box about their own laundry labels is not information, and the millisecond-level accounting that the speeded tasks on this site owe their visitors has nothing to attach to here.
